Special Collection

Next week there will be a Special Collection for Home Mission – an outreach to non-churchgoing (lapsed) Catholics.  On Home mission Sunday the Bishops of England and Wales invite us to pray for and support the work of evangelisation close to home through having a second collection.  The money raised will fund a number of national projects, including the development of resources to support ministry and outreach to non-churchgoing (lapsed) Catholics.  There are around four million baptised in our countries who never or rarely attend church.  Please do help the bishops to resource this important work.  Thank you for your support and do pick up a free prayer and information leaflet about Home Mission Sunday as you leave church.

 for Syria, Egypt and the World
(To be said by all at Mass before the sign of Peace)

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is discord, union;
Where this is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy,
for your mercy and truth’s sake.
O Lord Jesus Christ, as we think of Egypt and Syria at this time, may Peace replace anger and bitterness in Our World today and may all seek to become instruments of your Peace now and forever. Amen

Prayer and Fasting for Syria – Last Friday, 6th September,  Pope Francis asked that all Christians in the world keep that day as a day of Prayer and Fasting for the PEACE in Syria.

Let us pray that the Lord will have heard the prayers of his faithful and that our world Leaders will be cautious in their approach to endeavour to bring about an end to the very serious recent events that have taken place in Syria against their own people and to help bring about a Peaceful solution and an end to the dreadful suffering and loss of life. Let us pray that this can be achieved through dialogue and diplomatic means rather than the use of weapons. We also pray for the many homeless refugees who through this conflict have had to leave their homeland to escape this very sad and tragic civil war.. Lord hear our Prayer.     (the Editor)

Message from Deacon John Edwards

In mid-July I was at a meeting where it was said: “We don’t rest from work, we rest to work”. This made a bit of an impact on me and as it was said by an active Christian, when I met him the next day, I challenged him as being contradictory to the bible. “ By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.” Genesis 2:2.  He responded did I really think God needed a rest? The rest was given to the humans he had created, so our first day of existence was a day of rest.

We talked this through a bit more and recognised that in the New Testament the “Lord’s Day” was the first day of the week, and Christians honoured the Lord’s Day by taking a day of rest. More practically a new born baby spends a lot of its time asleep to enable its growth. I even have to admit that the main reason for resting when I am tired is so that I can do what needs to be done next. So at the end of this I concluded by saying therefore a vacation is not recuperation but preparation.

I believe however there is another factor to be added to this and that is allowing the Lord to help us in all that we do. Jesus himself said that we should lay our burdens on him. “My yoke is easy and my burden light”. Many of us do not feel this way at all and one thing I can see is that perhaps not all I do is what is being asked of me by the Lord. I need to be more discerning about the things I do or get involved in asking the Lord whether or not it is in accordance to His will. Then my rest will be effective preparation for the things He wants me to do.

I hope you are felling refreshed after your summer and I encourage you not to overburden yourselves.

God Bless, Deacon John
