As we tread your Holy Way,

promises eternal life;
Forgive all who seek to share it.

Message from Father David

Pope Benedict was born on the 16th April 1927 in Bovaria.  He was ordained Priest in 1951, became a professor of Theology in 1958, Professor at the University of Bonn in 1959 and later Professor at the University of Muenster in 1963.  In March 1977 he was appointed Archbishop of Munich and named Cardinal by Pope Paul VI.

In 1981 Pope John Paul II called Cardinal Ratzinger to chair the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith for the worldwide church.

Cardinal Ratzinger was elected Pope on 19th April 2005 (3 days after his 78th birthday).  His predecessor, John Paul II was elected Pope at the age of 58.  After the death of Pope Paul VI we soon became used to a relatively youthful Pope who was able to travel the world as a missionary for Christ.  In his eighties, Pope Benedict could not hope to copy or follow the Pastoral lifestyle of his predecessor in what is one of the most heavy and demanding appointments in the world.  Pope Benedict took up the office of Pope at an age when most people would have been enjoying retirement for several years.

His inability to travel as frequently and as far as his predecessor may have made him appear a little more remote, but his visit to England showed us that he did have humour and the same desire to serve God if in a slightly different way which is not surprising given the age difference.

As we look back on his time as Pope we can appreciate a holy man who was loyal to the teachings of the Church yet compassionate and devout.  He showed his understanding and compassion especially for the Anglican Clergy and people trapped in the debate about the changes in the Anglican Church when he established the Ordinariate for ex-Anglicans.

Many of us were surprised and shocked when on Monday we heard the news that Pope Benedict has decided to retire due to his health which affects his ability to fulfil his responsibilities as Pope.  Perhaps this is because we have got to know him and appreciate his authenticity and honesty in dealing with problems such as the abuse scandal.

Let us thank God for his ministry to us as Pope – wish him a happy retirement in the days he has left and ask the Holy Spirit for a worthy successor to a worthy Pope.

Please join me in saying a prayer each day in thanksgiving for the ministry of Pope Benedict and to pray for a worthy successor.

“Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in us the fire of your love.  Send forth your Spirit and we shall be created and you will renew the face of the earth”.

Ash WednesdayEcumenical inauguration of Lent was a great success.  Both the Rev’d. Neil Lambert of St. Marys, Ash Vale and Rev’d. Claire Holt of St. Pauls, Tongham expressed their appreciation for all the work put into preparing for the event and the very warm welcome they and their congregations received from the community here at Holy Angels.  The special meat free (horse free!) soups made by Claire, Carol and Evelyn were a great success.  (My own “Monastery Soup” also had one or two fans – perhaps they were just being kind for Lent!)

God Bless you all,    Father David
