Message from Deacon John Edwards

It has certainly been the most challenging two weeks of my ministry as a Deacon. I know that there is a great void in our parish communities and it is difficult to come to terms with that. I have found the scriptures for our daily masses very helpful. The Friday after Fr. David’s heart attack Ecclesiastes (3:1-11) reminded us that there is a time for everything and that reading concluded “.. man cannot comprehend the work of God from beginning to end.” In the Gospel Jesus asks “Who do they say I am?” Reflecting on these readings I found myself seeing that we are a part of a much greater picture. The world doesn’t revolve around me I am just a small part of the whole and that includes my thoughts and feelings. It is only through turning to “The Christ of God” that I can begin to find a way forward.

In the following week we journeyed with Job. Job struggles to understand the predicament he is in, he is encouraged to blame God, which he never does. He does indulge in bit of a pity party with his ‘friends’. Then Friday 3rd October, the Lord spoke “from the heart of the tempest”. It struck me that it was from the heart of our tempest that God was speaking to us. He reminded us of His awesome power and greatness, once again showing us our place in His plan. (Job 38:1; 12-21). The Gospel that evening reminded us that we have to not only see the glory of God but chose to follow, and be in a relationship with, Him!

This week we have been looking at Paul’s letter to the Galatians. Paul starts by describing the immense change God made in his life. He then continues describing his discernment process for his future, “to preach the Good News.” He moves on to be critical at the Galatians’ lack of faith and their ability to be easily distracted from God’s plan for them. For me it seems like a call to refocus and prepare to move forward.

Some of the responses in the psalms have also been comforting:

“Lead me, O Lord, in the path of light eternal”; “Let your face shine on your servant, O Lord”: “The Lord keeps his covenant ever in mind.”

Even the Gospel acclamations:

“Your word is a lamp for my steps and a light for my path.” “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” “Your words are spirit, Lord, and they are life; you have the message of eternal life.”

I hope that you too can find some solace and direction in the word of God.

I know that some of you will be disappointed that there will be no service at Holy Family and others that his funeral Mass is not at Holy Angels. There has been a need to compromise with the arrangements. It has not been possible to satisfy everyone’s wishes. We had to balance the needs of the Family, parishes and his brother priests to celebrate his funeral. I hope you can understand the difficulties we had.
