Message from Father David
The week of Prayer United Service this Year for Churches Together in Farnham will be at St. Thomas-on-the Bourne on Sunday, 20th January at 3pm. Our Parish belongs to Churches Together in Farnham and we have a very good relationship with the other ChristianChurches in the group so I hope a number of people from our parish will be able to represent us by attending the United Service.
St. Patrick’s Day this year (17th March) falls on a Sunday. There has been a suggestion that there may be some parishioners who would like to get together for a shared simple lunch at Ash on the 17th at 1.15pm. We are thinking of Irish stew and Potatoes for £3 per head. (bring your own wine or Guinness!) As catering would be for no more than 20, booking before hand would be absolutely essential. (If you are interested, please leave your name and telephone number and the number of places you would be interested in on the list in the Church porch).
This Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. This week it would be good to reflect on our own baptism and how it relates to this very historic event in the life of Jesus. Can we remember or do we know when we were baptised and where we were baptised? Do we know who our Godparents are? When was the last time we had contact with our Godparents?
The beautiful carved stone font in the medieval gothic style came to Holy Angels from the old St. Dunstan’s Church in Woking.
This Sunday at all Masses in place of the Creed water will be blessed and we will have the opportunity to renew our Baptismal Promises. During the first verse of the Offertory Hymn, we will be blessed with the Holy Water reminding us of the Baptism of Jesus and our own Baptism.
Affirmation of Faith
Priest: Do you believe in God, the father almighty, creator of heaven and earth?
All: I do
Priest: Do believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?
All: I do
Priest: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?
All: I do
Priest: This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
All: Amen.
It is a sobering thought that Lent begins on the 13th February (Ash Wednesday).
First Holy Communion Mass – This Saturday at 5.30pm. I would like to thank all those involved in helping organise the Mass and for the work our FHC Leaders do in preparing our young children for their First Holy Communion.
Youth Mass – There will be a Youth Mass TODAY followed with a cake sale to raise funds for the Youth Retreat. Again, I would like to personally thank all those involved in the support of our Youth and for the great deal of organisation that goes into making this an enjoyable time for them all. God Bless, Father David
Meditation on Parenthood and Children Kahlil Gibran
Your Children are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you and though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts. For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and he bends you with his might that his arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness; for even as he loves the arrow that flies, so he loves also the bow that is stable.
