Children’s Liturgy: We are blessed with a thriving young church at Holy Angels.   However, the current team of catechists for Children’s Liturgy is small, and we are finding it difficult to hold CL on a weekly basis.   Please note that we will be holding Children’s Liturgy on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month going forward.  We would hope to hold it every week again, but first we need more catechists who are prepared to lead the lesson.    Can you help us please?   If so, please contact Bec Newey on 07854 231469 or johnandbec@ntlworld.com

Prayer Group for Holy Angels and Holy Family Churches takes place once a month on a Tuesday in the Parish Office at Holy Angels.  The next date is Tuesday, 3rd June, 8th July and 2nd September.  (Coffee at 7.30pm for 7.45pm start).

Statue of Our Lady: You may notice that the statue of Our Lady in front of the altar has been changed and that we now have a statue of ‘Our Lady of Fatima’ which for many years has had pride of place on the sideboard of Norah, one of our Parishioners, but as it is rather large Norah has very kindly decided to donate it to the Church.  We are most grateful to Norah and we shall use this lovely statue of Our Lady for Special Feast Days.

May is the month of Mary

As I kneel before you,
as I bow my head in prayer,
take this day, make it yours
and fill me with your love
.
Ave Maria, gratia plena,
Dominus tecum, benedicta tu
.

This hymn was written by a lady called Maria Parkinson who was born in 1956.  She was a talented musician who responded to the Church’s call for some new music and hymns when the Mass was translated into English.  She wrote this very short, but devotional hymn honouring Our Blessed Lady never thinking at the time that it would become such a success so quickly and be loved by so many people.

TODAY’S GOSPEL

Father McCarthy, SDB reminds that this Sunday is Good Shepherd Sunday.  Christ is our Good Shepherd let us reflect on his unfailing love for us and how he calls us to be shepherds in love to others.

Reflecting on Christ the Good Shepherd we learn that –

Compassion is not learned without suffering.
Unless we have suffered and wept,
we really don’t understand what compassion is,
nor can we comfort someone who is suffering.
Unless we have walked in darkness,
we can’t help wanderers to find their way.
But if we have suffered we become pathfinders for others.
And it is by reaching out to others
that we ourselves are healed.
Jesus bore the marks of our violent world on his body.  Those wounds were the proof of his love.
They were the mortal wounds the Good Shepherd picked up in caring for his sheep.
The wounds of Jesus are a source of consolation, courage, and hope to us in our sufferings.
By his wounds we are healed.

A copy of a 3rd Century Statue, ‘The Good Shepherd in the priest’s garden at Holy Angels Church  (the original is in the Vatican Museum) was made by Mara Rendell in 1975 to mark the pastoral care of Father Michael Winter during his time as Parish Priest of Holy Angels.
