Collection of clothes for refugees in Northern Iraq

Many thanks to all those people who so kindly went to the trouble of sorting out unwanted items of clothing to donate to our Urgent Appeal at such short notice. It is so very much appreciated and we know that the couple who had appealed for help for their relatives and friends in Iraq were very moved by our Church’s kindness for responding to their appeal.

Let us all continue to pray for these people who are suffering so terribly in Iraq and pray for an end to all the dreadful suffering.

Next year is the 50th Anniversary of the beginning of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton. Bishop Kieran has extended an invitation for the Diocesan family to gather together in the Amex Stadium Brighton on Sunday 5th July 2015 from 10:00 am with a celebration mass at 3:00 pm. Hopefully there will be sufficient interest for us to run a coach or two from our combined parish. Speakers and Guests include: Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor; Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams; Leading Dominican Fr. Timothy Radcliffe OP and many more; Keep your eyes on the newsletter for future information. You can also look at www.dabnet.org/Festival50.

Meanwhile the preparations continue. The autumn/Advent there will be a further study programme on Church (communion). This will use the Vatican II document Lumen Gentium as its study platform. If you wish to lead a small group or need further information please contact Deacon John email: d.johnedwards@googlemail.com.

There is an introductory evening to LumenGentium at St. Dunstan’s Woking by Fr Laurence O’Keeffe OSB, Wednesday, 1st October 8.00 pm – 9.30 pm at St Dunstan’s, Shaftesbury Road, GU22 7DT. Holy Family

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. – This practice is one of the important ways in which we can commune with Our Lord, Jesus Christ. An hour before the Blessed Sacrament in silent contemplation is a well worth exercise. After the summer break this is to return to the Holy Family on a new day and at a new time. It will be on Thursdays from 6:15 – 7:15 pm this will then be followed at 7:30pm by Mass, if there is a priest available, or a Liturgy of the Word and Holy Communion after which there will be some light refreshments.

Harvest Soup and Cheese Lunch – 7th November

Holy Family J&P team are holding a Harvest soup & cheese lunch in aid of Disability Africa, on Friday 7th November at 12.00noon.

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

We celebrate this important feast for two reasons: (1) to recall an historic event that proved to be extremely important in the life of the Christian church, and (2) to underline the importance of the symbol and reality of the cross in the daily life of every Christian man or woman.

Today the sign of the cross has become a universal Christian symbol. When people sneeze and cross themselves or athletes make a sign of the cross before or during play, we recognize them immediately as Christians. Ornamental crosses are fashionable today in the form of necklaces, broaches, earrings, and the like. A crucifix (the cross with an image of Christ’s body upon it) identifies a church as a Christian church. Likewise, crucifixes in the homes, the school and the classroom is a constant witness and reminder of our faith in Christ who died on the cross to set us free. These are all useful and important ways of proclaiming and lifting high the cross of Christ. The cross is not just a piece of wood. It is a symbolic summary of the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ by which we have been redeemed. It is a symbol of our faith in the crucified and risen one, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus taught us that the cross should be a constant feature in the daily lives of his followers: “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23).

To take up the cross in this way we need to do more than wear a crucifix or place it in our surroundings. To lift up the cross the way Jesus asks us to do is a way of life. It is to accept self-denial and sacrifice as part of our daily lives. Sacrifice means to give up something that is of value to me for the sake of God and the benefit of my neighbour. Another word for it is LOVE. Love is measured by sacrifice. People who love much sacrifice much. Yet sacrifice does not make us poorer but richer. This is what we see in Christ. This is what we see in the lives of the saints. This is what we are all called to be. (Taken from a homily by Fr. Munachi E. Ezeogu, cssp)

A Prayer

Jesus, Who because of your burning love for us willed to be crucified and to shed Your Most Precious Blood for the redemption and salvation of our souls, look down upon us and grant the petition we ask for (mention here)

We trust completely in Your Mercy
Cleanse us from sin by Your Grace
Sanctify our work
Give us and all those who are dear to us our daily bread
Lighten the burden of our sufferings
Bless our families
And grant to the nations, so sorely afflicted, Your Peace, which is the only true peace, so that by obeying Your Commandments we may come at last to the glory of Heaven.
