7th Station:   Jesus falls a Second time

Prostrate on the ground He stumbled,
on the road to Calvary;
Bruised and scorned He now resembled
KYRIE, ELEISON.

8th Station:  Women of Jerusalem weep for Jesus

Is there one here who would not weep
As those women by the road?
Four sake He took wounds so deep,
CHRISTE, ELEISON.

9TH Station: Jesus Falls a Third time

Jesus falls again in weakness,
Bearing all our sin and pain,
Stumbling on the road to save us,
KYRIE, ELEISON

Message from Father David

“How are we doing during Lent?”  This was a question our Deacon asked us to consider in his homily last Sunday.  During the past week it is a question I have been asking in schools and as I go about my pastoral visits in the parish.  I have been very interested and sometimes amused to hear the efforts that many of you are making for Lent.  One Lady told me that her husband had given up alcohol between 9am and 9pm.  She found it amusing when he kept looking at the clock and eventually discovered it had stopped and he had “done an extra hour of abstinence” involuntarily.  Some of you have chosen the well tried Lenten Resolutions of giving up sweets, sugar or chocolate.  Some have decided to keep all the Fridays in Lent as CAFOD FAMILY FAST DAYS and to hand their envelopes in at the end of Lent.  One little boy of 6 said he had given up talking to girls for Lent (I couldn’t see how this would help others unless he was over talkative!).  All communities are from time to time troubled with gossip.  One lady who was finding it difficult to cope with gossip said that she would offer a prayer each day during Lent for the person who was troubling her with speculative comments about others.

Cardinal O’Brien may or may not be the victim of vindictive  gossip.  Bishops, Parish Priests, Doctors and Head Teachers and others in positions of responsibility know only too well that they can often be the target of vindictive gossip – often by people who don’t really know them and in some cases people they have never met.  Cardinal O’Brien has done what he asks all his  Priests to do if there is a serious complaint against them – stand down, even when you do not know who is making the complaint or what it is until the matter has been properly investigated.

Please remember Cardinal O’Brien and all in positions of responsibility who are so vulnerable to gossip.

God Bless you all,    Father David

A Reflection

“Do not judge others, so that God will not judge you, for God will judge you in the same way as you judge others”. (Matthew: 7 v1)

Dear Lord thank you for this time of Lent.  Help me to see that Lent is a special gift from You that helps me to know myself and to grow in faith. May I use this gift wisely and may it be a blessing upon me and upon my family and friends. Amen.
