Father David’s Message

This Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus.  Jesus did not need to be Baptised because he was the son of God, but in presenting himself for Baptism he sanctified the ceremony as the means by which we choose to be part of God’s family and open ourselves to God’s love. As there is only One God and Father this logically makes us all spiritual brothers and sisters.  We are all part of the family of God.

Sometimes new parents will come asking for their new born child to be baptised when they don’t really know what Baptism is.  As the child cannot speak or choose for itself it is essential that the parents or parent understands what Baptism really is and the promises they are asked to make for their child at it’s Baptism.  This is why we have a Baptismal Course for all new parents.

Today at the beginning of Mass, after the Penitential Act and before the Gloria water will be blessed to remind us of our Baptism.

God our Heavenly Father,
Your Holy Spirit descended on Jesus, at his Baptism in the River Jordon, revealing him as your Son, sent to bring the good news of salvation.

Grant that the same Holy Spirit that came down upon us at our Baptism may accompany us today and every day on our journey through life following in the footsteps of Christ.         Amen

On Wednesday there was a very interesting talk entitled “What makes us Human” on the Jeremy Vine program on Radio 2.  If you have a computer and would like to listen to it you can log onto the website for Radio 2 and listen to a recording of it until 15th January.  It is a very easy talk to listen to – not full of difficult language and in a way very entertaining.  R.E. Students may find it very useful for the basis of an essay sometime.  For those who do not have a computer we are trying to get hold of a copy of the written text of the talk.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins on Saturday, 18th January.  Please make a special effort to join in one or both of the Events that we as a Parish are participating in.  The first is on next Sunday, 19th January at St. Mark’s Church, Normandy at 3pm.  This will be a Taize style service based on the ecumenical community in France.  Anglicans, Catholics and members of the United Reformed Church will be taking park.  All Christians are welcome.

The second is a Songs of Praise Service on Sunday, 26th January at 4pm at Holy Family Church, Farnham.  Each Church Community will be choosing and introducing a hymn,  so with Anglican, Baptists, Catholics, Methodists and others this Churches Together event at HolyFamilyChurch should be a lively and interesting experience of prayer and worship together.

Please make a real effort to support these events personally and if you have non-Catholic friends or neighbours who are Christians why not invite them to come with you and join you at home afterwards for a drink or refreshments?

Please remember Nancy Phelps of Normandy in your prayers.  Nancy has died and her funeral will take place at Holy Angels on Wednesday, 15th January at 12pm and at the ShipLaneCemetery at 1.30pm.

At Holy Angels A place for quiet
Prayer is reserved behind the Altar by the Blessed Sacrament – Please feel welcome to use this area after Mass if you wish.

God Bless you all

Father David
