Message from Father David

The Liturgy (Ceremonies) of the Church seek to help us enter into the world and Life of Christ so that we do not feel distanced from Christ as if he was some vague historical figure whose life affected only people 2000 years ago.

The crib and Christmas Midnight Mass are such an obvious example of this together with the great Ceremonies at Easter.  This Saturday we celebrate a perhaps lesser known but moving liturgy which reminds us of the Presentation of Jesus in the temple.  It is a time when we bring unblessed candles into the Church and present them for blessing reminding us that the light of Candles in Church reminds us that Christ is the light of the world and we are called to reflect the light of Christ in our lives.

Although the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus will have passed this Sunday, to remind us of this special event, a young parishioner at the beginning of each Mass will carry in the statue of the Child Jesus from the Manager and place it on the Altar for Mass.  They will be led in by a young person carrying a special candle to remind us that the statue represents the infant Jesus – the light of the world.

This Sunday the readings and prayers are for the 4th Sunday of Year C.  The Gospel has a very far reaching and uncomfortably true observation that we often fail to respect the people closest to us and the people we live with in our local community.  This past week I needed to spend a couple of days at home to help my 91 year old (or should I say young) mother with a project.  I feel that having given up the possibility of grandchildren and supported the church, even supporting her son in his priestly vocation, she was entitled to 48 hours support. This meant that in the evening I was subjected to the T.V. Soaps that are so popular – Emerdale, Coronation Street etc.  I found it difficult to accept how these programmes in recent years have changed – everyone seemed to be shouting at each other – common good manners seem to have been put to one side and I couldn’t help thinking what effect this behaviour would be having on our young people.  Slowly on many T.V. Soaps Good Manners and caring for one another seems to be disappearing to be replaced by verbal bullying and selfishness.  Perhaps our lives need to be protected by our own vigilance on the shouting, bullying, selfishness and bad manners on some of the poor quality drama T.V. This kind of entertainment could become part of our children’s lives and our lives too and we would end up the unhappy victims of this behaviour.

Ash Wednesday

Your support for the Ash Wednesday shared frugal supper with St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Ash Vale would be very much appreciated.  Volunteers are urgently needed to help on behalf of Holy Angels.  Please see Father David or Deacon John if you can help.

Food Banks

We have for sometime been supporting local Food Banks.  Deacon John has some Vouchers so if you need a little extra help, please see him or me (Father David).  There is a proposal to establish a Food Bank distribution Centre in the old Methodist Chapel at Ash Vale.  Anyone who would like to support this venture representing Holy Angels is invited to see Father David or Deacon John.

Web Sites

Have you seen our Web sites recently?  A lot of work has been done on both web sites and we were informed this week and you will be delighted to know that our Holy Family web site is ranking on page 1 in Google and is also appearing on other major search engines.  We are also informed that there is an enhanced Google places listing at the top of page 1 of Google giving further details of HolyFamilyChurch.  This is a wonderful achievement for such a small parish and really shows that we are not lagging behind the larger parishes – in fact in IT at the moment we have passed many of them by.  Many thanks to those who have worked so hard on both our web sites.

Deadline for Parish Newsletter

Please remember that the deadline for information for the Parish Newsletter (when space is available) is now 1pm on Wednesdays (non-negotiable as the Newsletter will have gone to print)

A note from Rita

As you will see from Father’s comments above, we are improving our websites all the time.  After speaking with our web designer we are realising the importance of keeping the web sites fresh and up to date with new articles and pictures.

If you have recently celebrated a wedding or had your child baptised and are happy to send me some pictures of your special celebration I could display these on our web sites.

Many parishioners have promised that they would send me some of their pictures, but unfortunately in the excitement of the occasion they have forgotten.  Any nice articles or pictures you can provide me with will help to keep our websites up there in the ratings.

Have you seen our two video links on the Holy Family web site and Holy Angels web site (front page)?  The short video shows inside and outside both Churches with music.
