Father David Message

At the end of last week the news of the disaster in the Philippines was slowly breaking on the world.  Because the Typhoon had affected communications and transport the true scale of the tragedy was not known to begin with.  During the past week on the News and in the papers the huge intensity of the disaster has been slowly revealed.  At first it was thought the death toll was One thousand two hundred, but as helpers reach more isolated areas, this estimate is proving to be far from realistic.

The people of the Philippines are known for their hard work and ingenuity and abilities, but there is only so much they can do on their own.  If we had such a disaster here in England we would need more than our own national resources to “get back on our feet” and we would appreciate every offer of help.  In both our Churches we have several families from the Philippines and we assure them of our thoughts and prayers at this time.  On Wednesday we had a special Mass for those who have died in the Typhoon.

What can we now do to help?  Elena Parsons a Parishioner of Holy Angels has a number of contacts in the Philippines and she is investigating which charities and agencies are getting practical help to the people quickly.  Elena will be feeding this information back to us so that we can ensure that the funds we have raised at Holy Angels and Holy Family will be well used.

A big thank you to those who at short notice, contributed so generously to the appeal last weekend. A collection box for the Philippines will be available for the next few weeks in both churches by the statues of Our Blessed Lady.  There are also plans to collect clothing and cooking utensils – as soon as we have news of how we as fellow Christians can respond to this request we will let you know.  Please keep an eye on the Newsletter and whatever you can do to help will I know be very much appreciated.

Handy men or women (We are an equal opportunities parish!) Needed at Holy Angels for small occasional tasks like changing light bulbs, clearing guttering and small repairs and projects.  If you would like to be part of a “small projects maintenance team”, please see Rita or Fr. David.

The Stars of Remembrance for the Christmas Tree will be available again by popular request this year at our Carol Service on Thursday, 19th December.  Please invite your relatives and friends and let them know that they are welcome to have a Star in memory of a relative or friend.

Women’s World Day of Prayer Team:  Holy Angels has both supported and hosted Women’s World Day of Prayer well in past years.  We hope to keep up the good tradition.  Any ladies who would like to join the Holy Angels Women’s World Day of Prayer Group are invited to contact Colleen Rutter or Rita in the Parish Office.  If the ladies of the Parish would like a regular monthly Ladies Group, please see or call Rita.

The Feast of Christ the King – This is the article which we are inserting in the Newsletter which you may like to send with the email to the parents:

Last year those who made their First Holy Communion were invited to be “attendants of honour” for the Blessed Sacrament procession at the end of Mass.

The children may if they wish wear the clothes they wore on their First Holy Communion Day.  If your child made its’ First Holy Communion this year and would like to be an “attendant of honour” at one of the Masses next Sunday, please let Rita or one of the First Holy Communion Team know before Friday so a place can be reserve for them.
God Bless you all,   Father David
