Day for Life

Next Sunday, 26th July, is the Day for Life, the day dedicated by the Bishops Conference in England and Wales for celebrating and upholding the dignity of human life. This year’s theme is on cherishing and life and accepting death, which is extremely appropriate in the light of the forthcoming Assisted Suicide Bill. A second collection will be taken to support the crucial work of Day for Life, which enables the Church to fund the Anscombe Bioethics Centre as well as projects which work to protect life at every stage and every condition. Please consider giving generiously. More information can be found at www.dayforlife.org

Urgent Action – Assisted Suicide

On Friday 11th September the House of Commons will debate and vote on a Bill to legalise assisted suicide. This will put the most vulnerable people in our society at risk. Please contact your MP, urging them to attend the debate and vote against the Bill. You can send an e-mail to your MP via the Catholic Bishops’ Conference website (www.catholicnews.org.uk/assisted-suicide) or send a letter by post, a draft of which can be found at the back of the Church.

If you have personal experiences to share with them please do. MPs listen to their own constituents and will want to hear about your concerns.

Every person’s life is equally worthy of respect and protection. Even if someone loses sight of the dignity and value of their life (whether through pain, suffering or loneliness) they remain valuable in themselves and a member of the human family. They deserve care, support and sometimes medical treatment for depression, not assistance with suicide.

The Catenians would like to express their thanks to all who donated their old rosaries to the appeal. In amongst the rosaries received was a cross on a gold chain which contained 2 gold wedding rings. If these were donated in error, please speak to Fr Robin or the parish office to reclaim, otherwise they will be sold for scrap and the money sent to the Catenian rosary appeal.

Monthly National Day of Prayer & Fasting for Life

On Friday 24th July, the Vigil of St James, the Good Counsel Network are asking those who are able to, pray and fast for the end to abortion and euthanasia. 25th July is also the 47th anniversary of Humane Vitae. Your prayer and fasting is urgently needed so that the women helped by the Good Counsel Network, will receive the grace for God to continue their pregnancies. For more information contact the Good Counsel Network on 0207 723 1740 or see www.goodcounselnetwork.com

Fasting can take the form of all food except for bread and water for the day or fast from a particular food or luxury, e.g. chocolate, alcohol, cigarettes, TV. Fast from whatever you can given your state of health, but make sure that it is something that is a sacrifice. They are requesting people say a Rosary or an extra Rosary if you say it daily already. You could also offer an extra effort such as going to Mass on the day, or going to Adoration.

Mass for A&B Lourdes pilgrims

If you normally travel to Lourdes, but are not for whatever reason able to be there this year, a Mass is being held for pilgrims just like you to get together and experience some of the atmosphere and friendship of the Pilgrimage. This will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Whiteways Lane, Rottingdean, BN2 7HB at 10am on Saturday 1 August. There promises to be lots of recognisable Lourdes music to enjoy. After Mass, if you would like to stay with the group, they will create their own ‘Little Flower’ and decamp down to The Plough at the end of the lane for coffee, maybe a lunchtime drink or lunch. If you are intending to attend, please call/text Andrew Harvey (after 7pm weekdays or anytime weekends) on 07736 930849, or email andrewjharvey1@gmail.com so an idea of numbers can be gained.
